Effect of spray aeration on unregulated drinking water disinfection byproducts

چکیده
Spray aeration is a comparatively low-cost option to reduce trihalomethane (THM) concentrations in distribution system storage. The effect of spray on unregulated, toxic disinfection by-products was investigated bench-scale apparatus closed-tank and open-tank experiments. In the experiments, initially over 90% THMs, trichloroacetonitrile, chloropicrin were removed, while 36% dihaloacetonitriles removed. However, due buildup tank headspace, removal rates for all compounds decreased significantly with time, falling 44% 76% 58% chloropicrin. Removal zero. THM high did not decrease time. Considering results open closed tanks as approximate bounds performance expected under real-world conditions storage tanks, findings suggest that may haloacetonitrile-related toxicity halonitromethane-related be reduced.

Drinking water disinfection byproducts: review and approach to toxicity evaluation.
There is widespread potential for human exposure to disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water because everyone drinks, bathes, cooks, and cleans with water. The need for clean and safe water led the U.S. Congress to pass the Safe Drinking Water Act more than 20 years ago in 1974. In 1976, chloroform, a trihalomethane (THM) and a principal DBP, was shown to be carcinogenic in rodents. Thi...

Water pollution by wastewater discharge can cause the problem of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water supply. In this study, DBP formation characteristics of soluble microbial products (SMPs) as the main products of wastewater organic biodegradation were investigated. The results show that SMPs can act as DBP precursors in simulated wastewater biodegradation process. Under the exper...

The disposal and leaks of hydraulic fracturing wastewater (HFW) to the environment pose human health risks. Since HFW is typically characterized by elevated salinity, concerns have been raised whether the high bromide and iodide in HFW may promote the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and alter their speciation to more toxic brominated and iodinated analogues. This study evaluated the...

We report the characterization and determination of 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone and three new disinfection byproducts (DBPs): 2,6-dichloro-3-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 2,3,6-trichloro-1,4-benzoquinone, and 2,6-dibromo-1,4-benzoquinone. These haloquinones are suspected bladder carcinogens and are likely produced during drinking water disinfection treatment. However, detection of these haloquinon...
